What is a Virtual Power Plant?
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a coordinated network of distributed energy resources — home batteries, smart thermostats, EVs, solar systems, flexible C&I loads, and more — operated together to provide power to the grid as if it were a single dispatchable power plant. VPPs help balance supply and demand, integrate renewables, and defer expensive transmission and generation investments.

Utility planners, ISO market staff, data center and AI infrastructure developers, regulatory teams, DER aggregators, investors, and journalists can use VPPdirectory for fast, structured intelligence on the rapidly growing flexibility market.
Methodology: how listings are reviewed
Listings are compiled and updated regularly from a combination of public sources, including:
- Department of Energy (DOE) reports and program disclosures
- FERC and ISO/RTO filings (PJM, ERCOT, CAISO, NYISO, ISO-NE, MISO, SPP)
- State PUC dockets and utility tariffs
- Company disclosures, investor reports, and press releases
- Provider websites and direct submissions
Data confidence labels
- Verified: supporting documentation has been reviewed for the core claim shown on the profile.
- Source-linked: the listing is compiled from public sources or provider materials, but individual figures should still be confirmed before procurement.
- Needs review: useful for discovery, but not ready for market analysis without additional source checks.
- Provider-submitted: submitted by a provider and pending editorial review.
Capacity fields are labeled by their underlying basis because providers report capacity in different ways: portfolio, enrolled, forecast, contracted, deliverable, or program-level MW. Treat the number as a discovery signal, then confirm deliverable MW directly.
Update policy
We refresh the directory regularly. Each listing carries a lifecycle status, a data-confidence label, a last-reviewed date, and source links. Providers can claim and update their listings; significant changes are reviewed before publication.
