Ranking the Best VPPs in October 2026
By VPPdirectory · Published · Reviewed and updated
The best virtual power plant depends on what you need: commercial load aggregation, home battery enrollment, residential flexibility or software to operate a utility program. This October 2026 edition ranks comparable managed portfolios and builds a practical shortlist for those different jobs. Bigger does not automatically mean better, and a national portfolio is not capacity available at your substation.
October edition and editorial disclosure
This is the October 6 editorial edition, first posted October 12, 2026. Its ordering and historical portfolio figures are retained as a snapshot of the evidence selected for that edition. They are not an October 21 market census. The original publication metadata used the edition date; it has been corrected to the stated posting date, October 12.
Paid placement does not influence these rankings. This is an editorial comparison, not a performance certification, investment recommendation or guarantee of enrollment. Provider marketing claims are identified as such; confirm current terms and local availability directly before signing.
October 21 correction: the earlier Tesla comparison described nearly 500 MW as peak-dispatchable capacity. Tesla’s supporting disclosure describes a July 2025 event, so it does not establish a current contracted fleet. The EnergyHub 1,800 MW/50-utility statement is a historical company disclosure and is no longer a current capacity metric in our directory. Use the linked profiles for the latest reviewed evidence.
How we rank VPPs without mixing unlike numbers
For the numbered operator ranking below, we follow the directory's managed-portfolio rules: eligible active aggregators/operators, supported capacity claims, the same capacity basis, sorted by reported MW. Future targets, acquired records, market-wide totals, installed portfolios, overlaps and unsupported claims stay out. This is a scale ranking of eligible directory records, not a complete market census or a universal quality score.
- Managed portfolio: resources or flexible load under management, not necessarily firm capacity that can be dispatched simultaneously.
- Peak dispatchable capacity: a provider-reported peak figure whose geography, duration and season need to be checked.
- Event performance: delivery during a particular event, not an annual availability commitment.
- Software platform: an orchestration product that may manage partners' assets without owning their capacity contracts.
Historical snapshot: selected managed portfolios among operators
| Rank | Provider | Directory capacity record | What the number does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Voltus | 8.5 GW managed portfolio | 8.5 GW of firm capacity available in your market |
| 2 | CPower Energy Management (NRG) | Approximately 6 GW of C&I demand-side capacity | A single battery fleet or a guaranteed local dispatch |
| 3 | Renew Home | Nearly 3 GW of managed electrical energy use | 3 GW of battery export or continuously available generation |
Voltus leads this specific directory comparison by reported managed-portfolio scale. CPower's figure comes from NRG acquisition materials, while Renew Home's launch announcement describes controlled electrical energy use. These records support an initial shortlist; they do not replace a territory-specific procurement review, and the source dates differ.
Voltus and CPower: shortlist for commercial and industrial flexibility
For a factory, campus or commercial portfolio evaluating flexible-load revenue, Voltus and CPower are useful starting points because the directory records supported managed portfolios for both. Compare the program they can actually enroll your site in, not just the nationwide MW figure.
- Request a site-specific assessment of eligible load, permitted operating hours and required metering.
- Compare net payments after fees, baseline methodology, dispatch notice and underperformance penalties.
- Ask which party bears settlement risk and how production constraints are protected during events.
Renew Home: shortlist for residential load flexibility
Renew Home belongs in a residential-flexibility comparison, but its managed-use figure should not be treated as a battery-export fleet. For a utility or device partner, the important questions are which devices participate, which households are eligible and how reductions are measured. For a homeowner, the relevant offer is the one available through your utility or device ecosystem.
A thermostat program and a home battery program may both contribute to a VPP while offering very different participant economics. Compare comfort controls and opt-outs for managed load; compare reserve charge and cycling limits for storage.
Tesla and Sunrun: compare home battery programs separately
In the original comparison, Tesla was shown at nearly 500 MW and Sunrun at 425 MW. These belong on a home-battery shortlist, but the numbers do not share an established basis: Tesla’s cited figure describes a July 2025 event, while the Sunrun record uses a separately dated peak-dispatchable disclosure. The original values are retained here for transparency; neither is a current fleet census or a controlled head-to-head result.
- Tesla: check your exact Powerwall model, utility territory, enrollment route and reserve settings.
- Sunrun: check whether your owned or leased system qualifies and which local program applies to your contract.
- For either: ask for the net payout, event duration, maximum events, opt-out rules and warranty treatment in writing.
A smaller eligible local program can be a better fit than a larger fleet you cannot join. Program rates and calculator results on this site are estimates from published terms, never quotes. Confirm current enrollment, especially where battery programs have closed to new participants.
EnergyHub Mercury: shortlist for utility orchestration
The original EnergyHub example cited a company page describing more than 1,800 MW across more than 50 utilities. That page remains a historical platform-management disclosure, not a freshly established October 2026 fleet total or capacity for sale under one contract. The current profile does not carry it as a supported current MW metric. EnergyHub’s December 2025 acquisition announcement also changes the organizational context.
Utilities and OEMs should evaluate device integrations, forecasting, dispatch controls, measurement, cybersecurity requirements and integration with existing operating systems. Ask who recruits participants and who holds market obligations. Software capability and contracted capacity are different purchases.
What changed the conversation heading into October?
Sunrun, Renew Home and Tesla announced on June 24, 2026 that they were teaming up to offer more than 16 GW of flexible capacity to utilities and data centers. The announcement matters for procurement strategy, but that combined offer must not be added to each company's separate portfolio or presented as newly delivered October capacity. Buyers still need location, availability, duration, measurement and commercial terms.
For data center buyers, distinguish peak relief from energy supply and interconnection approval. A VPP can be relevant to a utility's capacity plan without replacing around-the-clock supply or guaranteeing a faster connection date.
Our verdict: rank scale, then buy for fit
Voltus leads the supported managed-operator comparison in our directory, followed by CPower and Renew Home. Tesla and Sunrun belong on a separate home battery shortlist; EnergyHub belongs on a utility-software shortlist. None is the best choice for every customer, device or market.
- Define your use case: participant enrollment, flexible-capacity procurement or software orchestration.
- Filter by your actual service territory and supported devices.
- Read each provider's capacity basis, evidence date and original sources.
- Compare net economics, event obligations and exit terms using the same assumptions.
- Request current program eligibility and a written offer before committing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best VPP in October 2026?
There is no universal winner. Voltus leads this edition’s selected managed-operator records by reported portfolio size. This is a dated editorial snapshot; local eligibility, devices and contract terms determine buyer fit.
Is Tesla's VPP better than Sunrun's?
A fleet-size comparison cannot answer that. Tesla’s cited 500 MW event figure and Sunrun’s separately dated peak-dispatchable record are not a controlled comparison. Check local eligibility, net payment, backup reserve and event obligations.
Do sponsors receive higher rankings?
No. Paid placement is labeled and does not determine the independent rankings. The numbered comparison here uses supported managed-portfolio records, not payment status.
Can I add the reported MW of all these providers together?
No. Managed portfolios, peak dispatch and software-managed resources measure different things, and provider fleets can overlap. Adding them can double-count resources and imply capacity that is not simultaneously available.
