Tesla VPP Telemetry Requirements
What telemetry Tesla Powerwall fleets must report to participate in California's DSGS, ERCOT's ADER pilot, and utility-run VPP programs — plus how Tesla's Virtual Machine Aggregator (VMA) handles it for you.
The short answer
Most utility and ISO VPP programs require 4-second telemetry at the aggregator (fleet) level and 1-minute site-level data for settlement. Tesla's VMA (Virtual Machine Aggregator) collects Powerwall data via the Tesla Gateway and streams it to the program operator, so individual homeowners never have to install extra hardware.
1. CA DSGS (Demand Side Grid Support)
California's DSGS Option 2 is the workhorse program for Powerwall VPPs, run by CEC and dispatched by CAISO through aggregators like Tesla Electric.
- Telemetry cadence: 4-second fleet-level SCADA to CAISO during dispatch windows.
- Data points: real power (kW), state of charge, availability flag, and grid-tie status.
- Settlement: 5-minute interval energy (kWh) from utility revenue meters or Tesla Gateway CT clamps.
- Baseline: 10-in-10 with day-of adjustment; Tesla handles the calculation on the homeowner's behalf.
2. ERCOT ADER (Aggregated DER Pilot)
ERCOT's pilot allows aggregations 100 kW–5 MW. Tesla enrolls Powerwalls through participating REPs.
- Telemetry cadence: 2-second telemetry to ERCOT during Ancillary Service deployment, otherwise 1-minute polling.
- Data points: net MW output, resource status, and ADER-specific operating limits.
- Settlement: 15-minute interval data from TDSP AMI meters (not Tesla-owned).
3. Utility VPP programs
Utility-run programs (Green Mountain Power, PG&E ELRP, National Grid ConnectedSolutions, Xcel Renewable Battery Connect) generally accept aggregator-level telemetry from Tesla rather than requiring per-site interconnect changes.
- Typical cadence: 1–5 minute polling during events, 15-minute revenue-meter data for settlement.
- Interface: Tesla pushes to the utility via a REST or OpenADR 2.0b VEN, depending on program.
- No homeowner action: the Tesla Gateway 2 already publishes the required data over its cellular / Wi-Fi backhaul.
What Tesla's VMA sends
Under the hood, every enrolled Powerwall reports the following to Tesla's cloud, which then aggregates and forwards to the program:
- Site AC real and reactive power (kW / kVAR)
- Battery state of charge (%) and available energy (kWh)
- Grid frequency and voltage at the point of common coupling
- Charge/discharge command acknowledgement
- Alarm and availability flags
Common gotchas
- Gateway 1 hardware: older Powerwall 1 / early Powerwall 2 sites with Gateway 1 can't hit 4-second telemetry and may be excluded from CA DSGS.
- Backhaul reliability: a site that drops offline during an event typically forfeits that event's incentive.
- Non-Tesla solar: if solar production isn't visible to the Gateway, the baseline calculation can penalize the site.
